North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp delivered her final address from the floor of the U.S. Senate this morning, reflecting on her life and her time in Congress.
In comments that were, at times, punctuated with emotion, Heitkamp paid tribute to family, friends and colleagues.
In her 35-minute speech, Heitkamp also urged individual senators to drive the legislative agenda and not just leave it to leadership. And she urged senators to work across the aisle to get results for their constituents.
“The greatest gift you have is not your bank account,” said Heitkamp. “The greatest gift that you have is the amount of time that you have left on this earth and what you do with that time. And I chose, for good or bad, to come to the United States Senate.”
You can watch her address here at C-SPAN, which televised the remarks live.
Heitkamp was defeated in her re-election bid in November, losing to North Dakota Congressman Kevin Cramer.
