Homecoming week is something high school students look forward to with the start of each new school year.
In one small North Dakota town, homecoming week was made even more special because of who won king.
Emily Medalen takes us to Harvey with the story.

Something beautiful happened in North Dakota last week.

You have just won homecoming king! How does that feel?
(Colten Schneider, Homecoming King)
It feels pretty good.

(Medalen)
Colten Schneider was born with Down Syndrome, and just won homecoming king at his high school in Harvey.

(Bret Dockter, Football Coach)
“If you’re down, and you look at him, you can’t stay down.”

Colten is the football equipment manager, and is described by his classmates as lovable and enthusiastic.
Colten is apart of FCCLA, FFA, and CYO, and never misses a friday night under the lights with his teammates.

(Bret Dockter, Football Coach)
“He’s a ball of energy. When he graduates.. we’re going to miss him.”

His classmates, teachers, and family say that it’s not hard to look past the stigma and let him shine.

(Bret Dockter, Football Coach)
“Our boys love him like a brother, which, he is a brother. They accept him for everything that he is and everything that he brings.”
(Trevor Schimke, Teammate)
“It kind of teaches everybody in our class to just accept people for who they are. We don’t look at him any differently than anybody else.”

(Medalen)
And Colten continues to show that his one extra chromosome can make life a little more special for those around him.
