Two people were killed in a house explosion in North Mandan early this morning.
According to the Morton County Sheriff’s Department, the blast destroyed the house north of Mandan on Highway 1806.
A pile of rubble is all that is left of the house. We spoke with Morton County Sheriff Kyle Kirchmeier about what happened.
“The force of this explosion, it was pretty violent, so there was definitely a big build up of gas in the house. And we’re just trying to determine what the ignition source was.”
There were three people inside the house, two females and one male.
One female died on site, and the male was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The surviving female, a juvenile, is still in the hospital.
“we’ve done a lot of interviewing of the witnesses that were there or around the area and the survivor. It’s been determined at this point that it was accidental.”
Kirchmeier says the magnitude of this explosion was so extreme, he can’t think of anything to compare it to.
However, there are some precautions you can take so it doesn’t happen to you.
“Sewer vents get froze up along with making sure your furnaces and everything are in good, running condition. But if you do smell that type of smell to make sure that you call 9-1-1 and have that checked out”
As the sheriff said, the first indication is that it came from a gas leak, although the investigation is still open.
The names of the victims and survivor have not been released yet.
Sheriff Kirchmeier says that they expect to release that information tonight or early tomorrow.
