HS Baseball: McDonald returns to play final season

The Century baseball team fell one run short of qualifying for the state tournament this weekend. But they still had an impressive year, with resilient players like Ian McDonald.

“Tried cutting back into the play to make a tackle,” Ian McDonald said. “On the cut, the knee went dead. I just tore it up.”

Ian McDonald ruptured his left ACL covering a kickoff last September. The next week, while having lunch at Century, his dad broke the devastating news.

“I instantly started crying,” McDonald said.”I knew that my whole senior season of football would be gone. It was pretty hard to deal with.”

Ian had surgery to repair the torn ligament on September 20, but he wasn’t able to start rehab until three months later. He was so far from the end of the process, he thought he would never complete it.

“It seems like it’s never ending and you’re never going to make it through,” McDonald said. “It feels like it’s going to take forever to get through. The continuation of how long it took was pretty tough.”

McDonald couldn’t compete on the field, but he showed his competitive spirit during his darkest hours.

“They thought I could get back within the six-to-eight month range.” McDonald said. “So I put my mind to it and tried to get back even sooner. I got back a month sooner than what was expected.”

Ian was cleared exactly five months to the day of his surgery. Kent Schweigert has not held back his all-state performer.

“He was full go from the very beginning,” Schweigert said. “We did check with him and he always said he was fine. We haven’t really had to worry about a whole lot.”

This season, Ian batted over 300 and led the team in fielding percentage. Just two of the reasons he’ll continue his career next spring.

“I’m going to BSC,” McDonald said.

Ian joins a BSC team that almost qualified for the national junior college baseball tournament.
