The ice is finally gone from Lake Sakakawea. The Corps of Engineers reports the ice went out today, May 9th.
That’s the 4th-latest ice-out date since the Garrison Dam formed the lake in the mid-1950s.
The latest the ice broke up on the big lake was in 1979 when it happened on May 17th.
The lake was ice-covered this winter for 133 days, well short of the record 165 days in 1955-56.
