IRS Phone Scams

News

There’s been a resurfacing of phone scams from people who want your money, that’s according to the Mandan Police Department…

Happening now…Emily Medalen is live with the story.

Good morning Alysia, I spoke with the Mandan Police about these phone scams – many of which are from people claiming to be the IRS.

These people often call from many different phone numbers from around the country, or using a blocked number.
If you answer, they will likely state that they’re from the IRS and you owe them money –
And that if you don’t comply, you’ll be arrested.

I spoke with Lieutenant Patrick Haug, who says these calls are fake.
He says that if these people get in touch with you, you should hang up the phone and report the call as soon as possible.

“Don’t send any money. If they threaten they’re going to keep calling back, then you can work with your phone company and maybe have that number blocked, but you just have to be mindful. You have to pay attention to what’s being said and if they’re calling about the specific IRS, or something like that, give them a call first before you send any money, and verify to see if they actually are the ones calling,” said Lieutenant Patrick Haug, Mandan Police Department.

Often, these scammers will ask you to send them a money order or green dot gift cards.
Lieutenant Haug says the IRS generally wouldn’t call you, and if you do owe them money, you’ll get a letter in the mail.

Alysia, I’ll be back later on Good Day Dakota with more on how to avoid falling into these phone scams.
Back to you for now.
