In June, KX News brought you the story of a victory garden. Renée Cooper re-visited that garden today, and tells us about a fruitful harvest.
Above is a picture of the State Penitentiary’s victory garden as it stands now. It’s come a long way in just two months.
All of the produce is donated to local charities, like Welcome House and Heaven’s Helpers Soup Cafe.
The State Pen has already given away about 112 pounds of vegetables, and expects to pull more from the garden before harvest comes to a close.
State Pen Resident Chris Vernon shares, “I’ve been in that position where I needed to go to the food banks or I needed to go to shelters because I was hungry. And I think it’s very important for that reason alone, that if it can help me, I know it can help other people.”
Vernon says the rest of the garden should be harvested by October. Then they’ll starting planning and preparing for next year.
