Homeowners can and should avoid putting cooking oil down their drains.
Bismarck is allowing residents to recycle their cooking oil for free.
Put your oil and grease in any type of closed container and give it to Public Works or just put it in the trash.
Cooking oil, fats, and grease clogs your pipes and causes sewer backups and it can also harm the environment.
That’s why Bismarck’s Water Utility Department is trying to prevent it.
“Putting fats, oils, and grease down your drain is one of the leading causes of sewer backups. It’s important because you can reduce your number of plumber visits into your home to remove grease plugs. It prevents obstructions in the city sewer lines,” said Sandra Young, Laboratory Technician in Bismarck.
If keeping oil out of your sewer lines means fewer visits from the plumber.
