The leaves are finally falling in mass quantities, prompting a lot of raking and the desire to burn leaves – nothing like that fall smell of toasted, dried tree greens.
However, it is illegal in Bismarck to burn leaves, and it is illegal also in Mandan. Both cities have been getting calls from people asking whether they can burn or not.
The Bismarck Fire Department notes on its website, “the City Code of Ordinance prohibits the burning of leaves, grass clippings, and yard waste within the City of Bismarck.”
The city of Mandan makes clear on its website that, “all open burning is prohibited within Mandan City limits with the exception of portable outdoor fireplaces.” And any outdoor fireplaces cannot be within 15 feet of a structure or combustible material.
Violation of the Mandan burn ban is a Class B misdemeanor.
Yard waste is supposed to be taken to city-operated drop off sites.
