Libertarian candidate for the 2018 Secretary of State’s race, Roland Riemers was granted a recount by the North Dakota Supreme Court Friday morning.
At the Capitol Tuesday morning, Riemers petitioned for a recount from the June 12 primary. Riemers received 247 votes, just 53 votes shy of the 300 necessary for nomination.
He was denied the initial request for recount by current Secretary of State Al Jaeger’s office.
Riemers told KX News today he will be leaving the country for a planned trip for the next two weeks and is unsure when the recount will take place.
The candidate plans to sit down with Secretary of State Al Jaeger’s office before leaving to discuss what the recount will look like.
Riemers expects there are two options:
1. The Secretary of State’s office will conduct a total recount of the race.
2. They may decide to go ahead and grant Riemers the nomination without recount, assuming they will find a discrepancy of 53 votes.
Riemers says if Jaeger’s office goes through with the recount, it may lead to the reopening of other races as well.
