A 16-pound, 6-ounce walleye caught exactly one month ago by Dickinson angler Jared Shypkoski is the new state record, according to North Dakota Game and Fish Department.
We talked to the angler himself who says this has always been a dream of his.
Shypkoski says it took more than five minutes to reel in the walleye. He says he took the fish to a taxidermist and is going to have it mounted.
“Felt pretty good! Made me pretty happy. Kind of a lifelong goal I never thought I’d achieve, of course, because that’s pretty one in a million,” he said.
Shypkoski reeled in the 33-inch fish in the Eckroth Bottoms area of upper Lake Oahe. He says he plans to go to the Columbia River next January to catch another one that size — or bigger — to break his own record.
Congratulations again, Jared!
