Local students show appreciation for music at festival

In North Dakota, Class B Tournaments aren’t just for sports; they are also held for music.

On Monday afternoon, the Region X Class B Instrumental Music Festival was held at Dickinson State University.

Students grades 7th through 12th from the Southwestern part of the state showed off their instrumental musical skills.

The students were able to compete in an individual or group category for Winds, Brass, and Percussions.

Some students even competed as both an individual and a group act.

Only the top 20 percent from each instrumental category are sent on to the state tournament, but one judge said it’s not just a competition it is also a learning experience.

“It also gives them the opportunity to have a one on one session with the judge. I get the chance to work one on one with some of the kids in my room,” said Dr. Jeremy Wohletz, assistant professor of music at DSU.

The 2019 Class B Music Festival is May 4th at the Bismarck State College campus for instruments only.
