Man to Serve 12 Months and 1 Day for Threatening U.S. Senator

A Fargo man is sentenced to 12 months and one day in federal prison for threatening United States Senator Heidi Heitkamp. 

57-year-old Kevin Lee Olson sent an email to Senator Heitkamp in December of 2016.

In it he threatened to shoot her in the head. 

He is charged with Threatening Interstate Communications by knowingly transmitting an e-mail, for the purpose of issuing a threat to injure another person, and with knowledge that the communication would be viewed by another person as a threat. 

Following his sentencing hearing, Olson was sent to federal prison and further ordered to pay $100 in special assessments to the Crime Victims’ Fund. 

After his sentence is completed he will have two years supervised release.

Olson faced a maximum sentence of five years.
