Mandan Airport’s Planes and Pancakes Gives Public Up Close Look at Aviation

Mandan was flying high, offering people a chance to feel what it’s like to be an aviator for a day.

To fly  is an awfully big adventure.

The public came for the planes but got the opportunity to discover even more.

“I really like to see people light up and say oh, that’s really cool how you guys exist,” Eden West, cadet Civil Air Patrol says.

Eden is a cadet in the Civil Air Patrol, a non-profit civilian branch of the United States Air Force.

So when the Mandan “Planes and Pancake Fly-In” came around, it brought just the right moment  to get the word out.

“I really like recruiting, I like to get out there, talk to people tell them about us,” West says.

It’s a volunteer group that promotes leadership, but  she hopes coming to events like the Fly-In will make The Civil Air Patrol more well known to the public.

“We want to get our faces out there,” West says.

But they aren’t the only ones showing people all they have to offer.

“We’re hoping number one that they’ll see what a fantastic airport that we have here and how fun it is to fly and how fun it is to be in the aviation community,” Mike Wagner, Fly In coordinator says.

And lucky for visitors, they don’t have to keep their feet on the ground to enjoy the day.

You get to go up in the air and see stuff. So you guys are telling me you get to go on an airplane?  Yep,” Adam Walker, Fly In participant says.

Kids like Adam and Avery don’t  just sit back and watch.

“My favorite part is seeing planes up close,” Walker says.

For them, it makes the the fly-in worth coming to year after year.

Mandan Airport staff hope the day gives the public a glimpse behind the hanger at their local airport.

More than 900 people attended the annual Planes and Pancakes Fly-In.

Visitors could get their face painted, enjoy a pancake breakfast, or spend time on their very own airplane ride.
