Mandan’s Main Street will be getting an upgrade next year.

A traffic signal project has been given the green light for 2019 for the lights down main street. The current traffic lights along main will be replaced with an intelligent transportation system. Some of the new features will include electronic signs that can let drivers know about traffic delays or parking availability, cameras to allow for real-time traffic monitoring, and cross walk buttons so pedestrians aren’t waiting to cross. Traffic lights only have about 25-30 years’ life span before they need replacing.

Justin Froseth; Mandan City Planning And Engineering Director: “They vary. Some of them are coming up on 30 years old I think. I think some of them, I don’t recall exactly, but are 40+ years.”

Mandan’s planning engineer says he doesn’t expect the project to cause too much traffic disruption, but traffic will be rerouted as needed.
