The Mega Millions lottery jackpot has hit $970 million, drawing closer to the $1 billion mark.

Lottery officials say higher than usual sales are driving the rising jackpot ahead of the drawing tonight.

The prize is the second-highest jackpot in U.S. history. A $1.6 billion Powerball prize holds the top spot, awarded in 2016.

Since July 24, no one has matched all six numbers and won the Mega Millions grand prize since. The odds of winning are 1  in 303 million.

If you do win, you have two choices: Take the full jackpot in 29 annual installments, or take half the money right away asd a cash payout.Either way, roughly half of what you win will go to taxes.

Mega Millions is played in 44 states, plus Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
