Advocating for basic human rights is not on the agenda for normal 6th graders. But it is for one Horizon Middle School student, and she got recognized for it.
The Human Rights Committee of Bismarck held an essay and poetry contest. The winner: 6th grader Julianne Cervantes. She is a Phillipino immigrant and took to paper to express her thoughts on human rights. She referenced the Dreamers act, and how she was heartbroken to hear that the program was taken away.
“Why doesn’t everyone have the same rights? I was thinking what would happen if I was living in another country, if I had another family, and I had the same rights of someone who didn’t have any,” said Cervantes.
Because Julianne won the essay contest, she got a pizza party for her and her classmates.
