Minot now has a safe place for sober living

Just four years ago, there was not one sober living facility in North Dakota.
Now, there are six right here in the western part of the state – three in Bismarck, one in Dickinson, one for the Three Affiliated Tribes and now one in Minot.

About a month ago, the Power of the Purse purchased a house they wanted to become a safe place for those in need.

Just this week, the women turned it over to administrators of The Sanctuary – a sober living home for women.

It’s the first of it’s kind here in Minot and is now accepting applications.

“I am a product of sober living, and I know that it works,” Carolyn Engh, administrator of The Sanctuary said.

She said it’s a safe, supportive – 100 percent sober – home for women.

“When a new woman comes in, I am able to say, ‘Welcome home. I know how scary it is because I was you.'”

It’s modeled after Hope Manor in Bismarck. Both homes are registered with the National Sober Living Association, that means they adhere to some strict rules.

Residents will be expected to work, attend meetings, take random drug or breathalyzer tests, and turn over a new leaf.

“Recovery isn’t a 30 day fix,” Judith Roberts, President of the National Sober Living Association told KX News over the phone.

“We recommend anyone coming into sober living to stay a minimum of 9-12 months. In that time, they are able to put their lives back together, making recovery the number one focus but also everything should be in place for when they leave,” Roberts said.

Engh said she plans to lead by example, since she is living proof that there is light at the end of the tunnel, “I want to be a part of saving lives, and I know that this home gives women the opportunity to grow and to live a life of recovery.”

If you’re interested in applying to live at The Sanctuary, you can call or e-mail Carolyn at 701-500-2216 or thesanctuary2018@gmail.com.

The Sanctuary is also a non-profit that can accept donations to help keep the doors open and lights on. Those can be sent to PO Box 144 Minot, 58702.
