Homes surrounding the area were evacuated.

Alexus Arthur went to the scene and talked with local residents.

“I heard like a lot like 10 or more gunshots like over there somewhere but it sounded like fire crackers,” said Elizabeth Gardner, 11 Years Old.

Elizabeth Gardner, only 11 years old, lives on this road with her family which was just blocks away from where the shooter stand off was.

“I was scared,” said Elizabeth.

The Rolette County Sheriff says that the call came in around 1:20am but activity continued through most of the morning. Ronald Wooten had a gun in the front yard and went back into the home. Wooten did discharge his weapon that hit a SWAT vehicle but no injuries have been reported.

“Rolette City this is a once in a million time thing hopefully,” said Gerald Medrud, Sheriff.

Elizabeth’s mother, Tia Gardner says that she’s frightened her daughter heard gun shots and is concerned because it happened so close to home.

“This is a shock to me that there would be you know gunshots. Now it feels scary,” said Tia Gardner, Mother/Rolette City Resident.

The sheriff says that if cases like this occur there are procedures in place. For example, they call in for back up. Today, about 30 officers from the highway patrol, border patrol, SWAT, and neighboring police departments came to assist.

“I just want to reassure them that we’re on top of things and when something like this happens we try our best to make sure everybody is safe. We evacuated everybody that was around the area that we could and we found a safe haven for them,” said Medrud.

“I feel safe with law enforcement,” said Tia.

Although families like the Gardners are still trying to get back to their daily lives, seeing the yellow caution tape just down the road holds the reminder that crime can happen anywhere even in your small town neighborhood.

The state’s attorney says there is no danger to the public.

And the investigation is still ongoing.
