The beautiful Spring weather has come just in time for national walking day. Go! Bismarck Mandan is putting on events all month to get people moving.
Marcene Thvedt with the group explains, “Go! Bismarck Mandan is a healthy community coalition. We promote healthy lifestyles where you live, learn, work and play. So, for everybody to just embrace a healthy lifestyle.”
According to the CDC, getting enough steps in your day can decrease the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.
“Just take a look outside, it’s a beautiful day, you know, we’re going to have a beautiful week, a beautiful month. Spring is here. The sun is shining. The birds are chirping. Just get out and enjoy the outdoors,” said Thevdt.
Many people have dogs to walk. However, that’s not the case for some, and Jerianne Salveson has some tips for those who need some extra motivation.
She said, “Oh, I definitely just say get out there. Just start slowly and walk as far as you can. Take a break and enjoy the view. But you just have to get out there and you’ll love it,”
Going around downtown Bismarck, you may have noticed some signs just like this one. They’ve been put up by the Downtowner’s Association and Go! Bismarck Mandan to promote walking throughout the city.
Thevdt added, “Love your heart, take your heart for a walk. Try and get 10,000 steps a day or 150 minutes a week.”
That’s what Marcene says is the path to staying healthy.
