Net Neutrality Repeal

The Republican-led Federal Communications Commission voted to repeal Obama-era net neutrality protections.

Under the approved proposal, the FCC could allow Internet providers like comcast or midcontinent to slow down Internet speeds or block content. The FCC would also eliminate a rule banning those same providers from putting their content first. This move is upsetting a lot people. Twitter, Reddit, Kickstarter and several other websites posted messages in support of keeping the Internet the way it is. Those in support of keeping Net Neutrality say they worry Internet providers and corporations will have too much control over how online content is delivered. KX News spoke with a local tech expert who gave an example of how we may end up paying more to have full access to the internet.

Marlo Anderson; Guru of Geeks: “So, you might come out with a package, for example, that says this is our streaming package and if you want to stream with this particular company, then it’s only going to cost you X dollars a month. But if you want to have wide open access, then it’s going to cost you $30 more a month because this company is offsetting the cost a little. So, there’s a lot of things at play here.”

The issue may ultimately end up being decided in court.
Congress can also try for a legislative solution.
No matter what happens next, the repeal won’t take effect until next year.
It must first be formally approved by the Office of Management and Budget.
