‘Never Forgotten Hike’ Honors Military Over Holiday Weekend

Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park hosted the The “Never Forgotten Memorial Hike”  to commemorate memorial day.

They came with flags, dressed in red white and blue, to enjoy the day and pay tribute to those in uniform.

“Past, present, and future, they’re all my battle buddies, even though I’ve not met them. But I honor them with all my heart,” MSgt. Doris Boepple, U.S. Army says.

MSgt. Boepple is just one of many who came out to show their support for the cause.

Young and old walked for the thousands of North Dakotans in the military.

Some remembered loved ones close to their heart as they walked along the route.

“My husband passed away 14 years ago tomorrow. He was in the guards,” Phyllis Dierk, memorial walker says.

While others were honored themselves.

“It warms my heart to the very core,” MSgt. Boepple says.

The group made the more than two mile trek from the Fort Abraham Lincoln Visitor Center to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery to honor all veterans past and present, and their sacrifice.

“Just never forgetting the soldiers and armed forces who’ve given their lives for our country,” Amy Zachmeier memorial walker says.

Because for military families, the sacrifice is something they won’t soon forget.

“It’s just kind of an honor to be here to walk and just remember that we are free and have the ability to come outside and enjoy the nice weather and walk because of them,” Zachmeier says.

Because for one veteran, taking the time to stop and remember the armed forces, should happen every day of the year.

“Think about the soldiers and thank a soldier, thank all service members they deserve it, they need it,” MSgt. Boepple says.

The park will also be hosting a military appreciation day on May 28 where admittance to the park is free for all military and their families.
