Mandan – The area’s next roundabout has been planned for the other side of the Missouri River.
Mandan officials say they plan to install a roundabout at the intersection of Collins Avenue and The Old Red Trail.
Federal officials say the intersection currently does not meet the criteria for traffic signals, so city leader opted for a roundabout instead.
The Roundabout will be built as part of an overall improvement project to being done on Highway 1806 From Mandan Avenue to 27th Street Northwest.
City officials tell us a roundabout is one of the safest traffic intersections around.
“You eliminate the head on and T-bone type crashes, so you’re looking at just angle crashes and they handle the flow of traffic better than a four way stop as well.” Said Mandan City Engineer Justin Forseth.
He adds the roundabout will be able to handle large truck traffic and will be the same size of one currently in operation in Bismarck at the intersection of Highway 10 and 66th Street.
