Juuling is a new form of vaping that is becoming increasingly popular with teens, and it is causing concern with parents and school officials.
“I do find it interesting that it looks like a USB drive. To me – I think that is an intentional target at K through 12 students,” said Calvin Dean, South Heart Public Schools Superintendent.
Juul, E-cigarette devices, have already been found at Dickinson Public Schools.
“We have seen Juuls for the first time this school year. We have seen 10 to 20, ” said Sgt. Brandon Stockie, Dickinson Police School Resource Officer.
Their size makes them easy to conceal, and their fruity smell makes them hard to detect,
but most of all a student could be smoking in class and a teacher wouldn’t even know it.
“It’s a little amount of smoke. They can blow it into their jacket if they are wearing a sweater,” said Stockie.
Stockie also said one Juul pod is equal to a pack of cigarettes and a major health risk to teens.
“Vaping as a whole is such new rave . . .a new product. . . we don’t know what the long term effects of what vaping are yet”.
Dana Urban, who works for South Heart Public Schools as an administrative assistant, said the new advancements in technology for tobacco smoking are a concern for her.
“As a parent of kids who are still in elementary, it scares me to think what they are going to come up with in the upcoming years”.
Stockie said punishments are already in affect in Dickinson.
“$100 fine from the police department side. It goes to municipal court and from the school side they do ISS, In – School Suspension”.
Dean said educating students on the Juul devices is important too.
“The dangers (health) not only, but the legalities of having these things in school or out of school”.
However, parents will have to start educating themselves on the latest trends.
“Anything on the internet that comes up and talking to other parents. Making sure everybody is on the same page,” said Urban.
Even though there have been juuling incidents reported in Dickinson, South Heart Public Schools hasn’t had any at this time.
