New Student Enrollment Up At Minot State

Enrollment numbers are showing promise of turning around at Minot State University.

President Steve Shirley says enrollment has not yet recovered from a drop in 2011, but this year, total student population fell less than one percent from last year.

3,300 students started classes today at Minot State.

Dr. Shirley says the new student population is up by ten percent, which he calls a sign of enrollment health this fall.

He says the freshman class and transfer students have been a recruitment focus, as each new class grows, it can lead to an overall enrollment rebound.

(Dr. Steven Shirley, Minot State University President) “We have a really nice increase in our total number of new students, new freshmen, new transfers who have transferred to Minot State and our new graduate students. As you look at those three populations of new students, we’re up about ten percent. Which is really a nice big jump for us for new students who are choosing Minot State University.”

Minot State officials are responding to the call for state budget cuts.

Department operation budgets have been cut, early retirements are being offered and open positions are to remain open.

A forum will be held early next month to address specific cuts.
