There will be no July 4th fireworks in Minot this Tuesday due to lack of funding.
(Adam Dyess/Nodak Speedway Event Coordinator) “Ten-thousand dollars is the minimum for the type of show that people are going to expect.”
In years past, that hefty price tag for the annual July fourth fireworks has been privately funded through different sponsorships.
Mum Pyrotechnics is the team that voluntarily manufactures the fireworks and puts on the show.
It’s an expensive event to host – a majority of the money goes straight to insurance, and it’s up to the Nodak Speedway to find a way to pay for it all.
(Dyess) “As we raise this money, none of the money is actually collected until everything is green-lit. Then 100 percent of the money goes to insurance and the actual cost of the fireworks.”
The Nodak Speedway race track also relies on sponsorships.
Dyess said additional funding for the fireworks isn’t always a guarantee.
(Dyess) “We’re going back into that pool of sponsors that we’re already contacting to possibly sponsor the race track and we have to go back to them to say, ‘would you be interested in sponsoring the fireworks as well?’ So it just becomes a lot.”
While residents aren’t exactly thrilled to be missing out on a July Fourth tradition,
(Bailee Saltzman/Minot) “Well, I mean, it’s Independence Day. It’s just a known thing we do and it’s unfortunate not to have something right here for our people.”
Dyess wants people to know that organizers are working to find a permanent solution.
(Dyess) “We’re in talks with city officials, we’re going to have some meetings here very soon. So that’s the one positive thing that we can take away from this is that we can work on a process to make this a more solid process for the future.”
Dyess said that Mum Pyrotechnics has to begin working on the fireworks about five months in advance, so most of that work is already done.
That’s why he hopes to be able to postpone the fireworks until Labor Day, rather than none at all.
July fourth races will still be held at the Nodak Speedway on Tuesday.
