One North Dakota leader brought home a national award from Minneapolis.
Lisa Bjergaard was awarded the Edward J. Loughran Outstanding Administrator Award for spending 36 years bettering the lives of North Dakota’s most vulnerable youth.
Bjergaard is the Director of the North Dakota Division of Juvenile Services. She says the biggest accomplishment she’s seen in juvenile corrections during her tenure is the amount of research being done to learn about a developing brain.
She adds, “However, I would say that what’s more important than what has changed, is probably the things that have not changed. And so there remain intractable problems, some of those are preventing children from abuse and neglect.”
Bjergaard says when it comes to helping children break the cycle, prevention is the key.
