Old Morton County Jail Overhaul Will Break Ground Next Week

New Tonight: a renovation in the works.

The Morton County Jail closed down in 2017 when they combined spaces with Burleigh County to make the Burleigh-Morton Jail.

Since then, the space has been sitting empty, other than a small room for dispatch personnel. But it hasn’t been renovated since 1986.

The Morton County Sheriff’s Office hired an architect to develop a renovation plan. They want to convert the jail into office space for the Sheriff’s Office and Mandan PD.

The plan was approved tonight at a Morton County Commission meeting.

A few of the old cells will still be used as holding cells for court hearings, but no inmates will stay overnight.

Morton County Sheriff Kyle Kirchmeier shares, “Once construction is completed, these cell blocks will still remain. They will become the holding cells in the new facility.”

The almost $3.5-million project will break ground next week.
