Old Scam May Be Making A Comeback

News

Bismarck – The Bismarck Police are warning potential renters of an old scam that may be making a comeback.

Police say scammers find a home that’s on the market for sale.

Then, they advertise that property for rent through classified sites such as Craigslist.

When someone expresses interest in the property, the scammer has the victim wire them money as a down payment or a security deposit.

The victim only realizes they’ve been scammed once they attempt to move in and realize the home is not actually for rent.

“A lot of time they’ll have them send money Western Union, or in more recent years it’s been the money cards, the Visa Cards, and the ones that we have looked into have been sent to like an address that comes back to a warehouse or something like that or a non existant address. Said Bismarck Police Crime Analyst Lynn Wanner.

Police say always do your homework to make sure the place you’re interested in is actually for rent.
