Pet Industry Booms

Playing, walking, feeding… those are just some of the duties pet-sitter Mandy Gaarder has on a daily basis.

And it looks as though she’ll be doing those things for quite a while.

“I have my months planned out… probably until January or February.”

Pet sitting alone is a growing demand in the Bismarck-Mandan area while people are at work or on vacation. The demand was almost non-existent 20 years ago.

“In the past, animals were looked at as animals or property, and now we see them more as a family member and we really take that into account when we do our monthly budgeting. We budget for their care”

Millennials are one of the main contributors to this industry with pets seen as a replacements to children.. 75% of all Americans in their 30s are dog owners.

“There’s so many people I know that don’t have kids but have pets and anything that your dog goes through that’s what a child does”

Mandy credits her boom in business to that family feeling. Moms and dads of pets want their animals to be in an environment where they feel most comfortable.

“There’s a huge need for it in this community. We don’t have a lot of actual facilities we can take our pets to such as dog kennels… so the next best option is to keep them at home… and that way they’re more comfortable in their home”

And it seems that value put on pets isn’t going anywhere.

“I would definitely take the dog to the vet rather than go to the doctor.”

Because, of people like Joel — The pet industry has grown 3-fold in the last 20 years.
