There’s a new initiated measure petition that would require the North Dakota Department of Transportation to issue red personalized license plates to volunteer emergency responders.

The red plates would offer free entrance to all North Dakota state parks and there would be no cost to get the plate.

The first three numbers on the plate would be the last three digits of their zip code and volunteers would get to choose the last three letters.

In order to get it on the ballot in November, the petition needs to have thirteen thousand – five hundred signatures.

“This is a way of honoring our volunteer emergency responders by giving them a free license plate,” said Norval Semchenko, Committee Chairman.

“To have something that all the members can have to tell where they’re from would be nice,” said Karter Lesmann, Burlington Fire Chief.

Currently, there are about three thousand signatures.
