The inclement weather can make it hard for many operations to go smoothly.

Power outages are more likely to happen in times like these because everyone is trying to heat up their home.

So being prepared for one can help you and your family stay safe and comfortable.

The main tip is to keep a survival kit much like you keep one in your car.

Pack it with blankets, flashlights, food and other essentials.

We spoke to Verendrye Electric on more tips.

“You should have a kit at home just for any kind of emergency or disaster –include batteries and flashlights candles and things to keep warm,” said Tom Rafferty with Verendrye Electric.

He also advises that if you see a power line down while driving do not go near it. Call 911 immediately.
