According to the National Domestic Hotline, 1 in 3 women in the nation have experienced rape, physical violence or stalking by a partner. That’s why one Mandan business is offering free self-defense training.

The Prairie Patriot Firearms Center offers a free, two hour class for people to come and learn about self-defense. Their motto is that protecting yourself is your right and obligation and you are the only one that can commit to being your own security guard. Owner of Prairie Patriot, Josette Severson says she teaches men and women basic self-defense skills and tips.

“Number one rule you are your own body guard. The police are not going to be there 24/7 to protect you. Its not my husbands responsibility. It’s not your boyfriends. It’s your responsibility,” says Severson.

Severson offers the class every month and says if you are ever in an uncomfortable situation, always go with your gut.
