Residents celebrate Heart Disease Month

People celebrated Heart Month by painting and learning ways to keep their own heart health on Saturday.

Sanford Health hosted its 4th annual Art & Heart Event. Residents got a chance to paint artwork instructed by the Theo Art School and talk with a cardiologist about heart disease.

The CDC reports that heart disease is the leading cause of death. But, there are ways to help reduce it.

“A person dies from a heart attack every 38 seconds. So, you can not change your age or family history, but you can work on things like diabetes by maintaining good blood sugar levels, seeing your doctor, and exercise daily,” said Stephen Boateng, Sanford cardiologist.

Over 80 people registered this year.

At the end of the session, participants received a voucher for a cardiac calcium score at Sanford Health.
