School Kids Lead Effort To Protect “Mace”

When the fourth graders at Longfellow Elementary found out that Minot’s new police dog, Mace, was going on duty without all his protective gear, they sprang into action.

Terri Duchsherer’s class organized a ‘hat day’ where kids, their families, and school staff could wear a hat all day by paying one dollar.
Today, the school held an assembly where the results were announced – and the kids discovered they’d raised one thousand dollars.

And when Ms. Duchsherer went to Hess Corporation to ask for a match – she was surprised at the response.

(Terri Duchsherer, Longfellow 4th Grade Teacher) “They were so impressed with us getting $1,000. They went above and beyond matching and gave us $1,900. So together we have $2,900 to donate to the Minot Police Department for Mace to be protected.”
(Emma Olson, Longfellow 4th Grader) 4720 “I care a lot about animals and helping our community and it’s helping Mace to keep him safe.”>>

The funds will also help Mace to get another vest to wear when he doesn’t need the ballistics vest.
