SkyFest 2017

Instead of a bird or a plane, the sky of Fort Stevenson State Park is filled with kites.
Everything from small to giant kites filled the air of the twenty fifth annual SkyFest.
Although kite flying can have its ups and downs, this event only has its ups … Hannah Davis visited to find out why.
Even from a distance, colorful kites can be seen flying in the sky.
“SkyFest is all about decorating the area from the ground on up. When we fly kites, we can have ground bouncers on the ground, and then we have our line kites, and then we have our kites at the very top. So anything in between is called line laundry.” said Rena Rustad, Event Coordinator.
There are hundreds of kites here today, and you don’t have to be experienced to fly them. Everyone from young to old is here to fly their kites.”
“People from all ages, and from all walks of life can really enjoy this, kite flying is fun for everyone.” said Rena Rustad, Event Coordinator.
For the last twenty-five years, people have gathered at Fort Stevenson to see the beautiful kites.
Here, all eyes are on the sky, instead of the ground.
“If people come out here and I see a smile, then I know I’ve done my job.” said Rena Rustad, Event Coordinator.
“Oh! Look at these kites! Ohh!” said Odin Reichenberg, Child Attending SkyFest.
This year, the weather was nearly perfect for flying.
“As long as the winds stay really steady, and they don’t get gusty, you can fly pretty much anything as long as it doesn’t go over twenty, twenty-two miles and hour. And a nice, a nice sweet breeze out of the south is what we -we really look for.” said Rena Rustad, Event Coordinator.
Everyone is welcome to stop by, and if you don’t already have a kite, don’t worry, you can purchase one at the event.

You can see the kites for yourself all weekend long, until the festival ends Monday afternoon.
