Expansion work at the Heaven’s Helper’s Soup Cafe in Bismarck is almost complete.
The owner, Mark, Meier, is expanding services by offering a roll-in shower, laundry room and Internet-accessible computers.
Those services are available if you earn “soup cafe bucks” by volunteering in the kitchen.
“Not only do they get a hot meal but a warm shower, clean clothes to wear, and a way to look for work,” says Meier. “We are going to have some classes in the back to help them get on their feet and just, really, the basic things each and every one of us as humans needs.”
Construction crews are busy with framing, installing electrical wiring and putting up a sprinkler system in the building at 220 North 23rd Street.
The project, budgeted at $290,000, is expected to be finished by June.
The soup cafe will then host a “reveal” of the expanded facility.
Meiers also notes the soup cafe is always in need of volunteers and cash donations.
