South Heart and Belfield High School are teaming up to take a swing at baseball.
The atmosphere at the practice of Heart River baseball team is everything you expect.
It’s excitement and the team is ready to play some baseball for the first time ever.
Senior Dion Madler hasn’t played baseball since little league.
When he first got word Belfield was starting a baseball team with South heart, it was only right for him to take a swing at it and sign up.
“Once I stepped back onto the field, I realized how much I missed the game, it was a great opportunity to join,” Madler said.
Madler says it’s going to be an honor to suit for a team this is going to go down in history.
“i get my picture up on the wall for the first team ever. It’s something that’s for sure,” he said.
Belfield principal Daren Kurle is Heart River’s head coach.
He says he knows starting from the ground up isn’t going to be an easy task.
“Nobody is going to feel sorry for us. We have to make sure we are playing hard because those teams aren’t going to care that this is our first year,” Kurle said.
With possible growing pains, keeping a positive attitude is some of the players main focus.
“Keep your head up and have fun. Get past it quickly don’t keep your head down and keep trying making plays,” Sophomore Cauy Shypkoski said.
As coach said, teams aren’t going to take it easy on them, and Madler doesn’t expect them too.
“I want that competition. If teams are going to take it easy on us. we might as well not even play,” he said.
All that aside, digging their spikes into the baseball diamond is going to be a feeling these kids haven’t in a longtime.
And it’s definitely going to be something to remember.
The Heart River baseball team will take on Shiloh Christian on April 11th.
