Spanky’s 34rd Birthday

The average lifespan of an African Penguin is between ten to twenty-seven years
Roosevelt Park Zoo celebrated Spanky the penguin’s thirty-fourth birthday on Wednesday.
Spanky has lived in Minot for the past twenty-three years and had a life long mate, who passed away.
You can tell him apart from the others by his black bowtie-like marking.
As penguins get older, they don’t tolerate temperature changes as well so Spanky stays inside more than the others.
“Keeper Nicole, she said, ‘It’s kind of like a human living to one-hundred forty. You don’t hear of it.’ He’s, like, within the top ten -I think he’s number six on the list- of being the oldest penguin in the country.” said Jennifer Kleen, Executive Director of Minot Zoo Crew.
Roosevelt Park Zoo recently obtained two more penguins from Seneca Park Zoo in New York to keep Spanky company.
