Strengthening Government to Government Relations Looks at Problems and Solutions on Tribal Land

Today the Indian Affairs Commission hosted a conference looking to strengthen government relations.

The governor, local mayors, and representatives from our state’s tribes came together to discuss tribal issues, and how they hope to fix them as session nears. Scott Davis, the Indian Affairs commissioner covered a wide array of issues that need tribal, state and federal agencies working together, including tackling opioid abuse.

Scott Davis; Indian Affairs Commissioner: “When we think about drug use, opioids, missing and endangered women, all those things, they’re all connected. Law enforcement, when you think of multi-jurisdiction, the state, the feds, the local, the tribal, you really need to work together in addressing those challenges.”

We also spoke with the Director of the three affiliated tribes, who told us tribal-state relations are good.
But MHA– like the state and country is still struggling with opioid overdoses.

Roger D. White Owl; MHA Nation: “Opioids, I think unfortunately has touched the whole entire nation, and it’s no different on Fort Berthold. A lot of the different things we have to deal with is the resolution of those issues. We’ve taken a proactive approach with our tribal dollars.”

MHA has developed its own drug task force to help tackle the issue. The conference continues all day tomorrow, where North Dakota’s congressional leaders will talk about improvements that can be made on a federal level.
