Having the heart of a teacher is the theme for this school year in Minot, and one teacher received the first accolade under that theme.

More than 16-hundred people make up the teachers and staff at Minot Public Schools, and one stood out from the rest.

Debra Rasmuson was named Minot Education Association’s Teacher of the Year.

She’s a reading specialist at Edison Elementary School.

She’s been there for about seven years, and at Lincoln Elementary prior to that.

She says it’s an honor to be recognized for something she simply enjoys doing.

(Deb Rasmuson, Minot Public Schools Teacher of the Year) “I try to instill caring and compassion and show kids that I expect effort and I want them to learn to read. The joy of reading. It’s a lifelong skill that everybody needs.”

Minot Public Schools start on Wednesday.
