Let’s go back in time to see how Medora came to be the the unique tourist attraction that it is today.

“We really have a great story here in Medora, and that’s really exciting, ” says Samual Kerr, Chateau de Mores Site Supervisor

A small North Dakota town, with a big history…

“In 1883, the Marquis de Mores came out here – he came out here with the idea of starting a slaughterhouse,” says Samual Kerr, Chateau de Mores Site Supervisor

The wealthy frenchman and his wife built one of the most famous tourist attractions in Medora – the famous Chateau de Mores – a home and hunting cabin in one.

“We have a major president that’s tied to this area as well,” says Samual Kerr, Chateau de Mores Site Supervisor

Around the same time, Theodore Roosevelt made his way to the badlands to hunt bison.
Kerr says Roosevelt “fell in love” with the rugged west, and in his lifetime, invested in multiple ranches in the area.

“The town had kind of gone through a period of decline after the slaughterhouse closed,” says Samual Kerr, Chateau de Mores Site Supervisor

Decades after the town’s deterioration, came a man who turned it all back around.

“The town itself really went through a revival in the 1960’s when Harold Schafer came out here, and he started looking around and decided this was a good place to invest money,” Samual Kerr, Chateau de Mores Site Supervisor

The self-made millionaire rebuilt the town and started the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation.
A theatrical production retelling Roosevelt’s life in North Dakota began around the same time, which eventually became the nationally renowned Medora Musical.

Kerr says seeing, hearing, and experiencing the rich history that has built the foundation of Medora, is what continues to bring travelers from across the globe.

“To talk to the visitors, to listen to them say, well yes, this was the last state on my list, but really, we should have put this on the top of our list because it really has a lot going for it. That’s really nice to see,” says Samual Kerr, Chateau de Mores Site Supervisor
