New research on where exactly the center of North America is located
Rugby and Robinson, North Dakota were recently arguing to take the claim of the center of North America.
And now Center, North Dakota joins the fight.
Center, North Dakota has an ironic name as it might just be the ‘center’ of North America according to
a professor in New York who programmed a new way to calculate the center.
Rick Schmidt from the Oliver County Extension Office says, “He’s developed a program that takes in the arch of the earth and can plug in the outer coordinates of any location and he can find the geographical center of any point.”
The answer he found was Center, North Dakota.
“He plugged it in and to his surprise that it actually comes within 4 miles of Center. To be the geographical center of North America,” adds Schmidt.
Rugby and Center are nearly 150 miles apart.
Center is excited about the news and the word is spreading fast.
Harold Wilkens, the Mayor of Center says, “Everybody’s surprised and excited.”
Dave Berger a local Rancher says, “Oh yeah, there’s a lot of talk around town, even the guys that work from Bismarck/Mandan bring it up.”
It isn’t just talk with the adults, but apparently the word is spreading quick.
Berger adds, “I think its going to be something for our schools to talk about. And I’ve got a son that’s a teacher and I asked him the other day if he’s going to talk about it and he’s a social studies and history. And he said they already talked about it.”
People in town knew they were the center of Oliver County, but now taking the claim of the center of North America is a title they want to have.
Schmidt, “I think it is a title we will pursue. And we are visiting with the right method that it.”
Based on the news, Center may now get together and form a committee.
Rick Schmidt says that this will bring in money and tourism to the town.
