The search for a new Bismarck police chief has been narrowed down to three candidates.

They are:

  • Dave Draovitch, Deputy Chief, Bismarck Police Department

  • Philip A. Smith, Jr., Chief of Police, Roswell, NM

  • Gregory Volker, Division Commander, Kansas City, MO Police Department.

The three candidates are required to complete an accomplishment survey which will be reviewed by a committee knowledgeable in law enforcement.

The finalists will then be assessed on their leadership and management skills.

Candidate interviews with the Bismarck City Commission will take place July 20 at a special meeting of the Board of Commissioners.

The three are looking to replace Police Chief Dan Donlin, who is leaving the department July 20 to work as a Safety Liason Officer for the North Dakota Department of Transportation’s Safety Division.

Donlin has been with the Bismarck Police Department for 30 years.
