Thursday’s Weather 12/29

Winds continue to be strong, but they are going to calm down within the next day. There is a break coming tonight, however, winds will pick back up for Friday. Winds across the state will continue to be sustained at 20-30 mph and gusting to 40 mph at times. By Saturday, they will be much lighter. Temperatures on Friday will be in the 30s, nearly 10 degrees warmer than today’s highs, but it will feel colder due to the stronger winds speeds. The warmer temperatures are due to a high pressure system building across the western United States. This will eventually give way because a dip in the jet stream will come through by the weekend and well into next week because much colder temperatures are coming across the region. New Years weekend will have highs in the teens and the first full week of 2017 will have highs just above zero degrees and lows below zero.
An Alberta clipper will come through North Dakota on Friday night, this does have a small band snow and northern North Dakota may see a few inches. Another small chance of snow also exists for Monday night into Tuesday. There is high uncertainty within this storm. The extended outlook continues to have colder temperatures, therefore there is no “warm up” in sight.

Thursday night, lows around 10 degrees and increasing clouds through the night and a mainly light wind, west/south at 1-8 mph.

Friday, highs in the mid 30s with a partly cloudy sky. Winds pick back up, south/west at 20-30 mph and gusting to 40 mph.

Friday night, a chance of snow for northern North Dakota as an Alberta Clipper comes through. A few inches of accumulation. The rest of the state will have a partly cloudy sky and winds calm down throughout the night. Winds start northwest/north at 20-30 mph and gusts up to 40 mph and then decreasing to 5-15 mph. Lows near 15 degrees.

New Years Eve, skies will be partly cloudy and winds west/southwest at 5-15 mph. Highs in the upper teens.

New Years Eve night, more clouds in the north than the south and winds will be light. Lows around 10 degrees.
