A 15-million dollar housing project in New Town is nearing completion.
The Red Hawk Estates are a pair of 36-unit apartment buildings located on the northeast side of town.
Construction is a bit behind schedule, but officials are expecting people to be able to move in in the next several weeks.
The buildings are in the middle of an area of rapid growth with dozens of new homes and other housing opening in recent years.
For some people it will be a chance to get out of very cramped conditions.
(Lana Washinawatok, Red Hawk Estates Tenant) “I’m excited about it, because we are in a one-bedroom, and I have a daughter who is in high school going here, so that was our first opportunity to get a place, was a one-bedroom. So we’ll be upgrading to a two-bedroom, which is exciting, because there’s more room. A little better, it makes living conditions.”
(Ken Hall, MHA Tribal Council Member) “Instead of say, living with their parents or grandparents in the basement, they’re now all of a sudden in their own apartment building, in a place they can call home. Really, it’s an improvement of quality of life, and I think that’s what leadership is all about, is to improve the quality of life for our constituents.”
(Elgin Crows Breast, North Segment Community Development Corporation) “This is going to alleviate a lot of the families that don’t have homes. Try to make it affordable. You go to Williston, even New Town here, they’re over a thousand dollars a month for one bedroom. We’re looking at three bedrooms for about $800, so it’s affordable.”
The MHA Nation put up the 15-million dollars from oil and gas proceeds for the project.
