A series of unexpected tornadoes ripped through central Iowa Thursday night, damaging several communities.

Even the National Weather Service was caught by surprise — their forecast models predicted possibly large hail and a slight chance of heavy storms.

Marshalltown was among the communities hardest hit. A state of emergency has been declared for that town. The city hall and police department buildings have been destroyed and the town’s only hospital has been damaged.

The towns of Pella and Bourdant were also hit by the savage and fast moving storms.
