Cheryl Kary, along with other women from the Sacred Pipe Resource Center, wanted to make prom a day of pampering for young Native American women.
They sent out a call for volunteers and it didn’t take long to get a reply.
“We had volunteers like crazy, it was really good. It was really nice to see the community all step in,” Cheryl Kary, executive director Sacred Pipe Resource Center says.
More than 10 people volunteered their time to prep the girls for their big night.
Because getting prom-ready can be expensive.
“We just wanted to be able to help out you know and be able to provide those things for girls who might not be able to do those things without having an event like this,” Kary says.
The girls were treated to hair, makeup, nails and some even received prom dresses and accessories.
And for one girl, the day offered up a brand new experience.
“I really like it. I never wore makeup [before] and I really like it,” Emma Jayne Lester, 8th grade Solen student says.
And not having to foot the bill is a big help for all of the students.
“It feels good because then I don’t have to pay for it, and they’re doing a really good job,” Antaya Thunderhawk, sophomore Solen High School student says.
“It’s very generous that they’re giving their time and everything to us, so I’m happy,” Thunderhawk says.
And as for the rest, they say the night ahead is what they are most excited for.
“It’s going to be lit,” Thunderhawk says.
Once the girls are ready, they will attend either the Bismarck or Solen High School prom.
