Ward County Expands Their Capacity

The finish line is in sight for the Ward County Jail expansion.

When the 39-million dollar project is finished, the jail capacity will be three times what it is today.

Alexus Arthur gives us an inside look at the construction.

“This will be the main entrance, the public entrance, to the building.” said Bob Barnard.

Welcome to the new Ward County Jail.

(Bob Barnard, Sheriff) “When people enter they’ll come to this window to be received by a receptionist or a secretary. This will be the entry into the existing jail.” said Barnard.

To help segregate the inmates, the jail will be split into sections on two floors.

“This would be one quarter of one of the floors. So these inmates would stay within this area unless they were taken out for exercise or for some other activity.” said Barnard.

There are 100 cells that are double bunked and can hold a capacity of 200 people.

“They would separate them based on their inmate status.” said Barnard.

The extra space is needed because the old jail is overflowing.

“We’ve already exceeded our capacity.” said Barnard.

Due to limited space, there are currently 28 inmates that have to travel to other facilities.

“Ward County spent 505,000 dollars last year on housing inmates outside of our own facility, so we need to get this facility done and open so we can have them here at a lower cost. There will be a control room operator here that will operate all the doors in this area, on this floor.” said Barnard.

With the new addition, Ward County will be able to hold up to 300 inmates.

“This jail certainly offers more efficiency than the old jail structure does.” said Barnard.

The new jail is predicted to be finished by the end of this year.
