The people in this fitness group are already strong because they’ve had to be.
“People don’t understand who haven’t been through it so it’s always good to be with a group of people who can say, I know somewhat of what you’re going through,” says Brenda Bergan, Breast Cancer Survivor.
They’ve had to go through much more than most.
They’ve had to fight for their lives against a deadly disease.
“There’s so much more than just the chemo and the radiation, I think that, it’s been almost two years for me and emotionally, it does a lot to your body…” says Brenda Bergan, Breast Cancer Survivor.
She is one of many people in the LiveStrong workout group at the YMCA.
“What we like to see is that they can play with their grandkids a little longer, they can go on their morning walks with their dogs again, just so they can get back into what they were doing before their cancer diagnosis,” says Jenna Bernhardt, Personal Trainer.
Anyone who has battled cancer gets to take the 12 week course for free.
“It’s like a little family, you see each other three hours a week, sometimes that’s more than you see your family and friends, and you really become a support group,” says Bernhardt.
Instructors test endurance, balance, flexibility and strength on an individual basis.
With the goal of improving mind and body.
“We had lost a son at age 16 and so to me, that was the ultimate pain and I felt like if God could get me through that, he could get me through this, so to me, if you can bring some good out of something bad, then is something we can grow from and get stronger from, we can help others to get through,” says Brenda Bergan, Breast Cancer Survivor.
Again, this is a free 12-week course for cancer patients and survivors.
